Former DOJ Official Pushes Merrick Garland to Re-Have a look at Mueller Probe
In a column for USA Today, a former prosecutor with the Department of Justice’s Public Integrity Division urged Attorney General Merrick Garland to reopen former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Donald Trump.
According to Noah Bookbinder, currently Executive Director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW), the latest revelations about Ex-AG Bill Barr’s handling of the Mueller report are an occasion to re-examine it and possibly expand it.
In conjunction with a report in which US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson “… beat up the Trump Department of Justice for misleading the court about the nature of its internal deliberations before concluding that then-President Donald Trump was the Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, “Bookbinder said this should open the door for the DOJ to investigate disabilities not only from Trump but also from Barr.
“Many of us have long suspected that Barr deliberately attempted to spin the contents of the Mueller report and produce false legal analysis to protect Trump from consequences for the crimes set out in the report. We now have evidence that Barr did just that, ”the ex-prosecutor indicted, before finding that Trump is now out of office and not protected by Justice Department policies of prosecuting an incumbent President restricts it is fair game.
Quoted in a letter signed by 1,000 former federal attorneys who wrote: “President Trump’s behavior described in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report would be in the case of any other person not under the Office of Legal policy Counsel on charges of incumbent president falls, resulting in several obstruction of justice charges, ”said Bookbinder, pointing out that a roadmap for further investigations against Trump already exists.
“The principle that no one is above the law is not self-evident. Justice can only be served if law enforcement agencies are willing to take anyone who breaks the law to justice – regardless of what office they hold. There is no greater threat to the rule of law than not holding the most powerful among us accountable, “he wrote, adding,” Neither Mueller nor Barr have made a final decision on whether or not to criminalize Trump for obstruction of justice under Justice Department policies should be pursued prevented this result as long as he was president. Now that Trump is no longer president, the department must decide whether he will be prosecuted and Attorney General Merrick Garland should inform the American people how that decision will be made.
He made his point clear and concluded, “There is ample evidence that Donald Trump committed crimes. Time and litigation have undermined both the legal protections he had as president and Barr’s illusory claims to relief. Now is the time for America to see equal justice in action. It is time to finish what Mueller started. “
