Edison Excessive mural pays tribute to civil rights icons, districts put together to redraw voting boundaries, and extra – OCDE Newsroom
Edison High recently celebrated the completion of a stunning campus mural depicting figures from the 1960s civil rights movement.
17-year-old graduate Logan Dunn used his talents to create 63 square feet of wall space on the Huntington Beach campus in tribute to Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, and Martin Luther King Jr.
“I’m pretty happy,” said the young artist. “It went together a lot better than I thought.”
According to the Daily Pilot, it was the tenth campus mural created under the direction of Edison art teacher Jennie Roy-Atwood, and the entire high school picked the subject.
And here are some of the other news from the week ending July 2nd:

- The Lowell Joint School District, which has long been operating under the umbrella of the Los Angeles County’s Education Bureau, became the jurisdiction of the OCDE as of Thursday, July 1. The shift, approved by local voters last year, is considered a first for a school district.
- Fueled by a robust infusion of federal dollars and California’s progressive tax structure, the legislature leaders agreed on a spending plan for 2021-22 that would provide record-breaking funding for public schools while adding a school year for 4-year-olds and significantly increasing the finances would extend help to college students.
- Child experts say the effects of the pandemic on children who have fallen behind socially, academically and emotionally could last for years. According to one report, the average US student lost the equivalent of five to nine months of study time.
- Finally, the Capistrano Unified School District announced two new principals for Capistrano Union High and Las Flores Middle Schools. The appointments are effective from July 1st.
