Democrats renew push for statewide family/medical go away
Democrats are pushing again for paid family and sick leave in Minnesota after Governor Tim Walz added it to his proposed state budget. Steve Grove, commissioner for employment and economic development, says that in a normal year, 10 percent of Minnesota workers take family or medical vacations – and more than a quarter have no wage replacement:
“The paid family leave program helps workers, and especially smaller businesses, take advantage of this at the cost of one cup of coffee per week per worker.”
Charlie Weaver of the Minnesota Business Partnership says a better approach would be …
“Work with employers to find out how to work on benefits and provide benefits, but not at the expense of a new tax on workers or creating an entirely new state bureaucracy that will cost tens of millions of dollars.”
The Democratically controlled Minnesota House passed a bill last year, but the Republican-controlled Senate failed to clear it.
Grove:
“Even our former president and Republicans in Congress think we need to take action, and this is something that states across the country are showing that it is possible.”
