Democratic lawmakers need legal professional normal to pursue civil rights lawsuits
MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) – Two Democratic lawmakers introduce bill to allow the Wisconsin attorney general to file civil rights violations lawsuits.
Rep. Jimmy Anderson from Fitchburg and Senator LaTonya Johnson from Milwaukee introduced the proposal Thursday. It would give the Attorney General the power to investigate and file civil rights violations if someone has committed a pattern of civil rights violations in housing, employment, or education matters.
The bill would include fines of up to $ 50,000 for an initial breach and up to $ 100,000 for each subsequent breach within seven years.
The bill faces an uphill battle in the Republican-controlled legislature.
