Dallas Man Recounts Efforts Throughout the Civil Rights Motion – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Price

Ernest McMillan is from Dallas and will tell you that he has seen many things in his life. One of the most famous was Dr. Heard Martin Luther King Jr. speak.

“We use his example because he was an ordinary person who did extraordinary things,” McMillan said.

King stood for equal rights for all. McMillan picked up the same torch.

As a young student at Morehouse College in Atlanta, he joined civil rights organizations such as the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. Their mission was to ensure rights for those who were oppressed.

McMillan said it was about doing the right thing, but he was also tired of seeing people being treated unfairly. He joined the same movement that Dr. King was instrumental in hoping that his contribution would make a difference.

While he said we still have a long way to go, we still have a long way to go.

“In the spirit of King and also in the spirit of Frederick Douglas who said that there is no progress without a struggle. So if our people young and old can get involved and participate, whether it is about voting, encouraging others, too organizing, contributing, words of encouragement or listening to young people we can all lighten the corner. I think that’s what Dr. King would say to us today. Carry on, “McMillan said.
