Civil Rights Lawyer Crump Endorses Wiley | Information

Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who represented George Floyd’s family, has assisted Terry Wiley as district attorney for Alameda County, according to a campaign announcement.

Wiley, a 30-year veteran with the district attorney’s office, currently heads the Department of Diversity, Justice and Inclusion. He is the first candidate to stand for office since Attorney General Nancy O’Malley announced in May that she would not run for re-election in 2022.

In addition to George Floyd’s family, Crump has represented the families of Breonna Taylor, who was killed by police in a drug raid in her home in March 2020, and Trayvon Martin, who was killed in a scuffle with George Zimmerman in 2012.

Floyd died last spring when he was arrested by police in Minneapolis. Former cop Derek Chauvin, who kneeled on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes, was sentenced to more than 22 years in prison for murder.

In his acknowledgment, Crump said, “As a professional attorney, [Wiley] has a consistent experience of working with underserved color communities to encourage greater trust and fairness. He has a long history of holding the police accountable for wrongdoing. Terry Wiley is the right person at the right time to lead the Alameda County’s District Attorney. “
