Biden Blasts Georgia GOP’s ‘Un-American’ Voter Suppression Legislation
President Joe Biden continued his strong assault on Georgia Republican electoral suppression law on Friday after calling it “sick” on Thursday. Governor Brian Kemp signed the bill behind closed doors on Thursday evening.
“This is Jim Crow in the 21st century,” President Biden said in a statement. “It has to end. We have a moral and constitutional obligation to act. “
The President makes it clear that the Republican Party is making the vote very difficult because it has no good ideas.
“When you have the best ideas, you have nothing to hide. Let the people vote, ”he said, blaming the Republicans for enacting a 95-page law that experts say would have allowed Republicans to overturn Georgia’s elections had it been a law passed by Donald Trump in November brought victory.
Biden went on to say, “Instead of celebrating the right to vote for all Georgians or winning campaigns for the merits of their ideas, the state’s Republicans rushed to un-American law to deny people the right to vote. This bill, like so many others persecuted by Republicans in state houses across the country, is an blatant assault on the Constitution and good conscience. Among the outrageous parts of this new state law, polling hours end prematurely so that working people cannot cast their votes after their shift is over. It adds strict restrictions on the submission of postal ballot papers that effectively deny the right to vote for countless voters. And it’s a crime to provide water to voters while they stand in line – lines Republican officials created themselves by disproportionately reducing the number of polling stations across the state in black neighborhoods. “
“I again urge Congress to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to make ballot boxes easier for all eligible Americans and prevent attacks on sacred suffrage.”
