AF Group / Johns Hopkins Analysis on COVID-19 Identifies Industries Most Affected by Staff’ Compensation Claims | State

LANSING, me., January 19, 2021 / PRNewswire / – A new study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that health care employment is associated with the greatest risk of developing COVID-19 infections, and with it, employee claims filing. The study, titled “What Industry Categories Are Employees At Excessive Risk of Filing a COVID-19 Workers Compensation Claim? A Study Conducted in 11 Midwestern States,” was authored by Dan Hunt |, DO, Corporate Medical Director at AF Group, and Edward Bernacki MD., MPH, professor emeritus for medicine, Johns Hopkins University Medical School.

According to the study, the vast majority of all COVID-19-related workers’ compensation claims submitted and accepted during the period under review came from healthcare workers (83.7 percent). Within the health care employment category, it has been found that workers’ compensation claims submitted by medical laboratories are at higher risk alongside traditional hospitals, nursing homes and other related categories. In fact, the study found that healthcare was the only industrial classification where the risk of compensation for COVID-19 workers was significantly higher.

Researchers from the AF Group and the Johns Hopkins University Medical School analyzed 21,336 AF Group claims filed between January 1, 2020 and August 31, 2020 from 11 Midwestern states, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
