‘Shiny Star’ Program Salutes Civil Rights Pioneers
Eric Englund
Celebrate Black History Month with the Ocean County Library and Toms River Area NAACP during a virtual production from the Bright Star Touring Theater on Saturday, February 27th starting at noon.
“Let It Shine: The American Civil Rights Movement 1955-68” introduces viewers to iconic events and people who work to promote equality, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Freedom Rides, Sit-Ins, March 1963 on Washington, and more.
One particular incident occurred in the company’s home state of North Carolina. On February 1, 1960, four North Carolina A&T University students – Ezell Blair Jr., David Richmond, Franklin McCain, and Joseph McNeil – sat down for lunch at the Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, where official policy was to stop serving to refuse any colored person. The four young men refused to give up their seats. Harassed, bullied, yelled at, these brave young men stood or rather sat for their right to be treated equally.
Bright Star concludes its second full decade of serving schools and communities with historical, classical, literary and educational productions.
The dramatic and musical program, recommended for fourth grade through adult viewers, is sponsored by the Friends of the Ocean County Library – Toms River and the Toms River Area NAACP.
