Federal civil rights investigation launched into taking pictures dying of Black man getting into his own residence in Columbus
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – The US Department of Justice and the FBI announced Tuesday that they would be conducting a civil rights investigation into the death of Casey Goodson Jr., who was shot dead by a Franklin County Sheriff’s MP last week.

US attorney David M. DeVillers announced that federal authorities will review the facts surrounding the shooting. Columbus Police Chief Thomas Quinlan said the effort would complement his department’s own investigation by the Critical Incident Response Team.
Goodson died Friday after being shot dead by Deputy Jason Meade, who was at the time on behalf of the U.S. Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force.
Meade is a 17-year veteran of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
The family say Goodson, 23, just returned from the dentist and was shot in the back.
The family says he is not armed.

The U.S. Marshal’s volatile task force was looking for violent offenders at the time, but Goodson wasn’t the person the task force was looking for, Columbus police said.
“After being briefed by CPD on the circumstances of the incident, I believe a federal investigation is warranted,” DeVillers said in a press release. “I contacted the FBI and asked that they work with CPD to investigate this case through our office.”
According to the authorities, once the investigation is complete, the evidence will be turned over to the Franklin County Attorney’s Office for presentation to a grand jury.
“The Columbus Police Department is extremely well trained to investigate the truth of this tragedy,” said Quinlan. “Regardless of our investigations, the involvement of the Ministry of Justice brings with it all the resources of the federal government to answer the community’s critical civil rights issues. This offers the highest level of transparency and a clear path to the truth. “
