Stockton Teen Launches Civil Rights Lawsuit For Alleged Police Beating – CBS Sacramento
STOCKTON (CBS13) – Stockton Police Department are on trial for allegedly beating a teenage boy after running him over.
Civil rights attorney John Burris and others met on the steps of Stockton City Hall on Wednesday to announce the lawsuit. They posted pictures of the episodes, and the teen’s parents said the police would not let them see their son at the crime scene, hospital, or detention center.
“I would never have known or thought in my life that my son would have been run over, pulled out of a vehicle and then brutally beaten and trampled,” said the victim’s father, George Carter.
Stockton police chief Eric Jones said he was “deeply concerned” about the incident and that the officers involved had been taken on administrative leave. An internal investigation has been launched, Chief Jones said.
According to the Stockton Police, officials attempted to overtake the vehicle they said was driving erratically and accelerating around 8:20 p.m. on December 30. Instead of pulling up, police said the driver turned off the headlights and the officers were in pursuit within three minutes.
During the pursuit, police said a Stockton police vehicle crashed into an innocent vehicle that gave way to emergency lights and sirens.
Police say the suspect driver lost control while attempting to turn around, and the officers used the PIT maneuver to end the chase.
Police said the vehicle’s side airbags were deployed and four officers “used force” while arresting the driver. It is unclear what kind of violence the officers used.
After being released at a local hospital, police said the suspect was admitted to Juvenile Hall for evading arrest and resisting arrest.
