Jan. 6 Certification Will Be His ‘Most Consequential Vote’
In a call Thursday with Senate Republicans, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said his January 6 vote confirming Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election “will be the most momentous I have ever cast.”
McConnell referred to the procedural event as a “conscience vote”.
Axios reported that “one source paraphrased McConnell as” I finish 36 years in the Senate and have cast many big votes, “including on war and impeachment.
“And from my point of view, just from my point of view,” said McConnell, “this will be the most consistent one I’ve ever cast.”
“The context was McConnell who said we are being asked to reverse the results after a man did not get that many votes and lost 7 million votes,” the source told Axios.
McConnell’s conference call followed a somewhat surprising move earlier this week by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), who defied McConnell’s wishes and publicly stated his objection to the vote being confirmed.
“Any member of the House joined by a member of the Senate can challenge their votes on January 6. The challenge leads to a floor debate, followed by a vote in each chamber,” the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. “Trump will inevitably lose that vote as Democrats control the House and a number of Senate Republicans have publicly recognized Biden’s victory, including Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT), who has labeled Trump’s refusal to accept the election as dangerous. “
If Trump’s tantrum finally prevailed in the Senate, where Vice President Pence was able to cast a groundbreaking vote, the democratically controlled house would stop any further action in favor of the current administration, giving Biden another victory.
