Equality Florida employees to have advisory position U.S. Fee on Civil Rights
NS. PETERSBURG, Fl. – Two Equality Florida employees will serve on the Florida Advisory Committee of the US Civil Rights Commission for the next four years. The commission announced the reappointment of Nadine Smith, Executive Director of Equality Florida, as chair of the committee and the first-time appointment of Brandon Wolf, Equality Florida Media Relations Manager, to the committee.
The Florida Advisory Committee is one of 51 groups that advises the Commission on a range of issues that affect civil rights policy.
“The work to protect civil rights is critical to the future of democracy,” said Smith. “It is an honor to be reappointed to chair this committee and to continue these efforts over the next four years. The results of our in-depth voting rights investigation have uncovered many areas that call for leadership and action. We will continue to sound the alarm. “
Established as an independent, bipartisan federal fact-finding agency, the mission of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission is to provide information on developments in national civil rights policy and to improve the enforcement of federal civil rights laws. They pursue this mission by investigating alleged disenfranchisement and alleged discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, age, disability or national origin or in the administration of justice.
They play a vital role in promoting civil rights through objective and comprehensive research, research and analysis on issues of fundamental importance to the federal government and the public.
State advisory boards, such as Florida, serve as a vital link between communities affected by civil rights law and policy makers. They examined issues such as the affordability of water, school discipline differences, policing, mental health and the criminal justice system, fair housing, hate crimes, the right to vote, and others. The reports and memoranda of these committees help inform future policy changes at the local, state, and national levels.
“It is an incredible honor to serve the people of Florida in this capacity,” said Wolf. “Promoting civil rights protection for all Americans is a responsibility that each of us has. I look forward to giving our community a voice as we fulfill our nation’s promise. “
