SPOKANE, Washington – Spokane City Council President Breean Beggs will be on medical leave to complete cancer treatment.
Beggs announced the vacation Monday evening, saying he would complete chemotherapy and radiation. The president was diagnosed with cancer in June. On June 14, Beggs had a tumor removed from his tonsil.
“This treatment is tiring, but it will be worth coming back to my life and the people I love,” Beggs said in a statement on Facebook.
Councilor Candace Mumm will be Council President Pro-tem until Beggs returns.
“You and our dedicated staff will keep me updated and I will continue to focus on my top priorities for the city,” said Beggs. “I appreciate your thoughts and support during this time and know that I am surrounded by great family and friends.”
Beggs takes vacation in August and September.
