Web Rises As much as Slam Mitch McConnell for Claiming Filibuster ‘Has No Racial Historical past at All’

With more Democrats advocating reform or elimination of the Senate filibuster, Republicans are pushing back hard. Senate minority chairman Mitch McConnell last week threatened to do scorched earth against Democrats if they kill the filibuster. He was asked on Tuesday about the device that was used repeatedly during the Jim Crow era to block civil rights legislation.

The filibuster, McConnell told reporters, “has no racial history at all. None. There is no argument about this among historians. “

The 79-year-old, who has been the Republican Senator from Kentucky since 1985, is wrong – and many have used social media to explain how wrong he is.

Adam Jentleson, former deputy chief of staff to former Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, wrote a book about the Senate and the filibuster. He supports killing it.

Good question. McConnell’s answer is wrong. His office is trying to clean it up, but he said what he said. For over a century it was generally understood that the filibuster was primarily dedicated to maintaining white supremacy and blocking civil rights. This is what others have to say:

The filibuster is a relic of Jim Crow and was used to block the advancement of civil rights. Read @AJentleson’s book KILL SWITCH and catch up on the story. Currently, McConnell has blocked the majority agenda, which reflects the will of most Americans. #EndTheFilibusterNow https://t.co/Jw9gWzHvDU

McConnell studies history in general and Senate history in particular. He certainly knows the racial history of the filibuster very well.

Moscow Mitch McConnell ignored the Boulder mass shooting to lie that there is no racial history with the filibuster.

A reminder that he was posing for a picture smiling and standing right in front of a huge Confederate flag. It’s racist story.

Strom Thurmond’s 24-hour and 18-minute filibuster of the Voting Rights Act of 1957, the longest 1-person filibuster in history, is different. And I have more. https://t.co/6UUVki9g7c

McConnell can grab sand with his nonsense with no racial history regarding the filibuster.

I read this Mitch McConnell quote that the filibuster has “no racial history,” and it took me seconds to find an article on Senate Dixiecrats from 1948 that threatens to filibuster a draft defense that it is for, it included racial segregation in the military. McConnell is full of crap. https://t.co/N2wmN3LB2v

If McConnell doesn’t realize that the filibuster was intertwined with racist motives, that makes him a racist.
