Nationwide Park Service invitations public enter on formative planning doc for Birmingham Civil Rights Nationwide Monument

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The following information is from the National Park Service:

Today the National Park Service (NPS) began soliciting public contributions to support the development of a General Management Plan (GMP) for the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument. Established in 2017, the border of the national park includes the 16th Street Baptist Church, Kelly Ingram Park, St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Masonic Temple Building, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the AG Gaston Motel. Only AG Gaston Motel is owned and managed by NPS in partnership with the City of Birmingham.

“General management plans outline the long-term direction of a national park while defining the conditions necessary to optimally conserve resources, manage operations and allow visitors to use and enjoy them,” said Kristofer Butcher, Superintendent of the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument. “The involvement of citizens and stakeholders in this process is vital and we look forward to hearing from the public with whom NPS shares its responsibilities.”

The NPS is asking for feedback on a number of questions contained in a newsletter on the project website to aid in planning for the future of the park and to identify preferred interpretive and educational experiences. The first public commentary on GMP runs from June 7th to July 10th and includes the opportunity to submit written comments and participate in virtual public sessions that will take place on June 16, 1 p.m. – 1 p.m. and June 17, 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. : 30 p.m. to take place

During the sessions, the NPS will share information on the GMP process, including the criteria used to develop different alternatives, and answer participants’ questions. The presentations of the meeting will be identical and attendees are encouraged to join at the most convenient time slot offered. Register to participate using this link.
