The city of Los Angeles mourns the loss of a long-time city guide.

Former Police Commissioner Rose Matsui Ochi died this week, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. According to the LAPD, Ochi was a member of the Board of Police Commissioners from 2001 to 2005.

“Your work, which led the ministry through the turbulent days after the 9/11 attacks and the first phases of our federal approval decree, was crucial,” a statement by the LAPD said in part.

Oshi also worked in the LA Mayor’s Office and Criminal Justice Planning Bureau. She later became the first female executive director of the California Forensic Science Institute and made history as the first Asian-American person to serve at the assistant attorney general level advising President Bill Clinton.

LAPD chief Michel Moore said in a statement that Ochi’s influence on LA will be felt in the years to come.

“She was a tremendous force fighting for civil rights, judicial reform, and accountability and integrity of law enforcement agencies,” Chief Moore said in a statement.
