He also criticized Trump for his recent attacks on the judiciary.

“It is unacceptable for political candidates to treat our electoral system as if we were a third world nation and arouse suspicion of something as fundamental as the sanctity of our voting,” he wrote. “Also, it is unacceptable for the President to attack the United States Supreme Court because its liberal and conservative judges did not rule with his side or that the Court failed him. It was the goal of our founding fathers to isolate the Supreme Court from such obvious political motivations. “

On Sunday he tweeted several times against Trump and once said: “Continuing this circus is just … so harmful … so unproductive … so narcissistic … what about our country?”

Mitchell was one of the few Republicans who paid his respects to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“I am deeply saddened by the death of Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” he wrote on Facebook. “She was a dedicated lawyer who served our nation with honor. Her life and work on the Supreme Court have created a legacy that will inspire generations to come. I thank her family at this time for their service and my deepest condolences. “

Prior to becoming a congressman, Mitchell was chairman of the Michigan branch of the Conservative Ralph Reed Faith and Freedom Coalition, a right-wing anti-LGBTQ organization that is part Christian evangelical and part tea party.
