Memphis, Tennessee – Protesters gathered in Memphis Sunday to speak against police shootings in Knoxville and Columbus, Ohio.

The name of Ma’khia Bryant, the 16-year-old who was shot and killed by a Columbus police officer while trying to stab another teenager, was read along with other black women shot by police.

The police were asked to use de-escalation techniques, although it was discussed which techniques should be used.

There was also a call to devalue the police while others want to get rid of the police altogether.

Protester Cherisse Scott doesn’t want to eliminate the police, but says there needs to be better communication.

Scott would like a one-on-one interview with proposed Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis.

“I want to make sure everyone who runs the police is involved in this community,” said Scott. “I want to make sure that anyone who brings the police to the place where I live has an understanding of the experiences in my community. “”

Groups could send questions to those interviewed for the police chief, but activists say that’s not enough.
