BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – Civil rights icon Dolores Huerta is set to celebrate her 91st birthday this weekend, and she has no plans to slow down anytime soon.

In 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom declared her birthday, April 10, Dolores Huerta Day in recognition of her more than 50 years of commitment to civil rights and justice. Huerta is still very active in a wide variety of areas, but while great strides have been made, there is still a long way to go to achieve equality for all.

“Here we are now this spring and President Biden is making sure we have millions of vaccines available for people to use so we can control the pandemic and get back to normal, but going back to normal is not enough,” she said. “We have to change things and make our society a fairer society, do everything we can to end racism and misogyny, homophobia and climate deniers, so that we can really make sure that we can save our planet and do all of this together. Si se puede! – We can do it.”

The Bakersfield City School District also recently voted to encourage educators to teach students about Huerta’s life and struggles and the rich history of the Central Valley.
