Civil rights organization files lawsuit over Iowa’s new electoral law

Updated: 10:25 AM CST March 9, 2021

A civil rights group is now suing the state of Iowa over a new early voting law. Late Monday afternoon, Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill that cuts Iowa’s early parliamentary term from 29 to 20 days and closes polls an hour earlier at 8 p.m. The League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against the bill, which, in their opinion, is the suppression of voters. The lawsuit alleges that the new law violates the Iowa Constitution and will “place a burden on voters in general, with a particularly serious impact on the right to vote for minority voters, senior voters, country voters, young voters, poor voters, new voters and voters with disabilities.” Reynolds argues that the measure promotes transparency and accountability. Reynolds said in a statement: “This legislation strengthens consistency by providing Iowa electoral officials with uniform parameters for election day, postal voting, database maintenance, and a clear appointment process for local auditors. “Iowa is one of several Republican-controlled states that are tightening electoral laws over what is known as suspicion of the system. Much of the suspicion stems from the numerous false claims by former President Donald Trump of widespread electoral fraud that the 2020 Iowa elections are going to run smoothly passed, with record turnouts and no evidence of fraud.

A civil rights group is now suing the state of Iowa over a new early voting law.

Late Monday afternoon, Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill that cuts Iowa’s early voting period from 29 to 20 days and closes polls an hour earlier at 8 p.m.

LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa, filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the bill that it believes is voter suppression.

The lawsuit alleges that the new law violates the Iowa Constitution and will “place a burden on voters in general, with a particularly serious impact on the right to vote for minority voters, senior voters, country voters, young voters, poor voters, new voters and voters with disabilities.”

Reynolds argues that the measure promotes transparency and accountability.

Reynolds said in a statement, “This legislation strengthens consistency by providing Iowa electoral officials with uniform parameters for election day, postal voting, database maintenance, and a clear appointment process for local auditors.”

Iowa is one of several Republican-controlled states that are tightening electoral laws because of a lack of trust in the system.

Much of the suspicion stems from the numerous false claims made by former President Donald Trump about widespread electoral fraud.

A Republican proponent of the bill previously admitted that the 2020 Iowa elections went smoothly, with record turnouts and no signs of fraud.
