Advocacy work wanted for paid family, medical depart to occur

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Heads of state and federal government urge Congress to approve President Biden’s budget, which includes paid family and sick leave.

They say the importance of the benefits has been exposed by the pandemic. And they say paid vacation pay will empower frontline workers and lower-income households.

A coalition of lawmakers, business and parents is pushing for a universal plan at the federal level.

Congressman Peter Welch says lobbying needs to be done at the state and federal levels.

“It’s about the understanding in a society that we are mutually committed. As part of this commitment, we need to put in place systems and structures to enable this promise to be kept, ”said Welch, D-Vermont.

Main Street Alliance in Vermont is launching a public relations campaign to raise awareness and support for paid family vacations.

The Scott government is working on a voluntary plan at the state level, but they say they are also waiting to see what happens at the federal level before making final decisions.
