Elected MP Peter Abbarno, R-Centralia, who was elected to represent the 20th district in the House of Representatives in November, was assigned to a number of committees ahead of the 2021 legislative session.

His duties include acting as a deputy member of the House Capital Budget Committee and as a member of the House Environment and Energy Committee and the Civil Rights and Judiciary Committee.

The State House Republican caucus made the nominations on Friday. Abbarno is a lawyer in Centralia.

“These committees offer a real opportunity to have an immediate impact on policies and projects in the 20th District,” Abbarno said in a press release from the House Republican Caucus. “Our community has got amazing benefits from the capital budget, such as STEM school buildings, flood control and job creation infrastructure. I look forward to creating more opportunities for working families and businesses. ”

Abbarno, who was elected to replace retired MP Richard DeBolt, R-Chehalis, is due to be sworn in on Jan. 11.

The capital budget provides funds for the construction and repair of public buildings and facilities. The Civil Rights and Justice Committee deals with legal issues such as constitutional law, anti-discrimination measures, tenants laws, consumer protection law and other issues.

The Environment and Energy Committee deals, among other things, with the state environmental policy law, the growth management law, the coastal management law, air quality, waste and climate change.

“I believe my experience as a practicing attorney on the Committee on Civil Rights and Justice will be vital. … From a practical point of view, I’ve worked through legal issues from the state house to the courthouse, ”Abbarno said. “From Woodland to Rochester, the 20th District offers great opportunities to create jobs, maintain our pristine backyard, and support our rich history and tradition of a natural resource economy.”
